Autumn Beauty Sunflower

Bring a breathtaking burst of fall color to your garden with Autumn Beauty Sunflowers. Unlike the classic single-yellow sunflower, Autumn Beauty produces a stunning mix of rich golds, bronzes, burgundies, and bi-colors on branching plants that bloom prolifically from summer through frost. A showstopper in the garden and a favorite for fresh-cut bouquets, this heirloom variety will have your neighbors stopping to admire every time.

Variety Highlights

  • Type: Annual, branching sunflower
  • Height: 4–6 feet tall
  • Bloom Colors: Gold, bronze, mahogany, burgundy, and bi-color blends
  • Bloom Size: 4–6 inch flower heads
  • Days to Bloom: Approximately 75–90 days from direct sow
  • Use: Garden display, cut flowers, pollinator garden, bird feeding
  • Heirloom: Open-pollinated, non-GMO

Planting Instructions

  • When to Plant: Direct sow outdoors after last frost when soil temperature reaches 50–60°F. Can succession plant every 2–3 weeks for extended blooms.
  • Sunlight: Full sun (6–8 hours minimum per day).
  • Soil: Well-draining soil with a pH of 6.0–7.5. Tolerates poor soil but thrives with light compost amendment.
  • Planting Depth: Sow seeds ½–1 inch deep.
  • Seed Quantity: avg. 120 seeds
  • Spacing: Thin to 12–18 inches apart for best branching and air circulation.
  • Watering: Water deeply once or twice a week. Once established, sunflowers are drought-tolerant. Avoid overwatering.
  • Germination: Seeds germinate in 7–14 days.
  • Fertilizing: Light fertilizer at planting. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers which promote foliage over blooms.
  • Harvesting: Cut stems in the morning when outer petals are just opening for longest vase life. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continued flowering.

Growing Tips

  • Plant near a fence or wall for wind protection on taller stems.
  • Excellent pollinator magnet — attracts bees and butterflies all season.
  • Leave seed heads standing in fall to feed birds through winter.
  • Stunning in mixed bouquets with zinnias, cosmos, and ornamental grasses.
