Sugar Baby Watermelon seeds — the beloved classic that has been delighting backyard gardeners for generations. This compact, icebox-style watermelon produces small, round fruits averaging 8–10 lbs, packed with intensely sweet, deep red flesh and a thin, dark green rind. Perfect for smaller gardens, raised beds, and families who want a personal-sized watermelon that ripens quickly and reliably.

Sugar Baby is one of the most popular heirloom watermelons for good reason — it's easy to grow, matures faster than most varieties, and delivers that classic summer sweetness in every bite. A must-have!

Planting Instructions

  • Start indoors: 3–4 weeks before last frost date
  • Direct sow: After last frost when soil reaches 70°F (21°C)
  • Sow depth: Plant seeds 1 inch deep
  • Spacing: 2–3 feet apart in rows 4–6 feet apart
  • Germination: 7–10 days at 75–85°F (24–29°C)
  • Sunlight: Full sun (8+ hours per day)
  • Watering: Water deeply 1–2 times per week; reduce watering as fruit ripens for sweeter flavor
  • Soil: Rich, well-draining, sandy loam (pH 6.0–6.8)
  • Quantity: 20-50 seeds
  • Days to maturity: 75–80 days from transplant — one of the fastest maturing watermelons!
  • Harvest tip: Ripe when the tendril nearest the fruit turns brown and dry, and the underside turns creamy yellow

Tip: Sugar Baby vines are more compact than most watermelons, making them great for smaller spaces.
